Apple just dropped pricing bombshells across its entire Mac and iPad lineup, with the M3 Ultra Mac Studio jumping $1,300 from $3,999 to $5,299. That's a 32.5% increase on a single SKU, and it's not the only one.
The AI Memory Tax Hits Consumer Hardware
Tim Cook laid it bare in an interview last week: high-bandwidth memory for AI servers is gobbling up supply and driving component costs through the roof. Apple tried to absorb the hit, but Cook called the situation "unsustainable." The company's statement to Reuters said it had never seen component prices increase this much, this quickly.
The result is a broad price hike touching almost every Mac and iPad model. iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods escaped untouched for now, but the ripple is wide.
How Much Each Product Went Up
MacBook Neo now starts at $699 (up $100). The 13-inch MacBook Air jumped to $1,299 (up $100), and the 15-inch to $1,499 (up $200). M5 MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 (up $300), while the M5 Max version hits $4,099 (up $500). The iMac rose to $1,499 (up $200). M4 Max Mac Studio went to $2,499 (up $500).
iPads took double-digit percentage hits across the board: base iPad now $449 (up $100), iPad Air 11-inch $749 (up $150), iPad Pro 11-inch $1,199 (up $200). iPad mini rises to $599 (up $100). Even the accessories weren't spared: Apple TV 4K is now $199 (up $70), HomePod $349 (up $50), HomePod mini $129 (up $30), and Vision Pro climbed to $3,699 (up $200).
Cook Pins Blame on Server Memory Demand
Cook specifically called out the increasing amount of memory going to high-bandwidth memory used for AI servers. "There's less supply at a time when consumers want devices and the memory guys are passing along huge price increases," he said. That's a direct line from AI infrastructure buildout to your next MacBook sticker shock.
Amazon's current Prime Day pricing still undercuts Apple's new list prices by $50 to $450 on some models, but those are temporary discounts, not a new normal. Expect the higher prices to stick until memory fabrication catches up or demand shifts.
What Comes Next
These increases aren't a one-off pricing adjustment. If AI server memory demand keeps climbing, component cost pressure will persist. Apple's next move whether to absorb more or pass through again will signal how long this supply squeeze lasts.
