ChatGPT still holds the top spot with over 1.1 billion monthly users worldwide. Gemini follows at 662 million, Claude at 245 million. But the trend line is clear. From January to May, ChatGPT dropped from above 50% to 46.4%, while Gemini climbed to 27.7% and Claude hit 10.3%. Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI each have less than 5%. The top three assistants now command 89% of all time spent on AI assistant apps.

What's Driving the Defection

Users are switching based on brand trust and ecosystem fit, not just raw capability. OpenAI's February deal with the U.S. Department of Defense triggered a measurable spike in uninstalls. That tells me values alignment matters as much as model performance to a non-trivial slice of the user base.

Gemini's growth is largely powered by deep integration into Google's productivity suite. Claude is winning on reputation for focused work: its 13% subscription conversion rate leads the entire field. That's a metric investors should watch closely, especially as the industry shifts from growth-at-all-costs to monetization. Sensor Tower estimates H1 2026 app spending will hit $4.2 billion, up from $1.83 billion in H1 2025.

The Monetization Chessboard

ChatGPT started showing ads in February. By May, 17% of daily users were seeing them. Software, shopping, media, and food are the biggest advertiser categories. ChatGPT is already sending referral traffic to Target, Walmart, and Costco. Amazon blocked ChatGPT's crawlers and got stagnant referral traffic as a result. Meanwhile, Walmart's AI assistant Spark is gaining ground while Amazon's Rufus sees flat growth.

Regionally, Asia saw its first download decline (3.3% in Q1 2026) despite leading in absolute downloads. North America and Europe dominate in-app spending. That split will determine where companies invest in premium features.

Overall, the market is maturing. Downloads and spend growth rates have decelerated, but absolute numbers keep climbing. The next battle isn't just for users, it's for durable revenue. Claude's 13% subscription rate and Gemini's ecosystem lock-in are the templates others will need to beat.
