69% of organizations cite tool sprawl and visibility gaps as the top factor limiting their cloud security effectiveness, according to the 2026 Cloud Security Report from Cybersecurity Insiders, in collaboration with Fortinet. That number lands alongside another grim one: 66% of the 1,163 surveyed IT and security professionals lack strong confidence in their ability to detect and respond to cloud threats in real time, up from 64% last year.

Tool Sprawl Is the Bottleneck

88% of organizations now operate across hybrid or multi-cloud environments, and risk signals are scattered across disconnected consoles. Teams aren't short on alerts—they're short on connected context. Holger Schulze, founder of Cybersecurity Insiders, put it bluntly: security teams spend their time piecing together what happened instead of responding to what is happening now. Attackers use automation to find and chain exposures faster than defenders can correlate the dots, making the complexity gap a genuine operational liability.

Spending Up, Maturity Flat

Cloud security now consumes 34% of IT security budgets on average, and 62% of organizations expect that number to rise in the next 12 months. Yet 59% still rate their cloud security posture at lower maturity stages. Capability gains continue to trail spending growth. Throwing more money at point tools hasn't closed the gap—it's widened it.

Most Automation Is Still Alert-Driven

Only 11% of organizations report fully autonomous remediation workflows. The majority—37%—rely on basic automation that generates alerts and recommendations, leaving humans to stitch together responses. AI-driven detection isn't saving anyone yet: just 18% have it fully operational across their environments. The automation stack remains mostly a noise generator, not a force multiplier.

Security leaders are responding by reassessing their architecture. Asked how they'd build their cloud security strategy from scratch, 64% said they'd choose a single-vendor platform unifying network, cloud, and application security, versus 27% sticking with best-of-breed point tools. That shift from fragmentation to unified telemetry is the only credible path forward if teams want to act before exposure turns into compromise.
