Fermionic's RF chips will be the first Indian semiconductors manufactured by GlobalFoundries—a foundry that already runs wafers for Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Broadcom. That's not a prototype run; it's production-grade silicon for radar, satellite comms, and telecom infrastructure.

Why an Indian Startup Beats the Prototype Trap

Most fabless startups get stuck in the endless prototype loop. Fermionic CEO Gautam Kumar Singh put it plainly: "We needed more than a manufacturing vendor, we needed a partner who understands RF complexity and can support production grade execution." GlobalFoundries India delivered that—full commercial partnership, not just a tape-out service.

Fermionic is part of the Indian government's Design Linked Incentive (DLI) early cohort. The company's roadmap covers beamformers, phased-array transceivers, RF switches, high-linearity power amplifier chains, and integrated front-end ICs for "intelligent sensing, adaptive communications, and AI-enabled RF systems."

What Gets Made, and Why It Matters

The chips are millimeter-wave RF silicon—the kind that makes phased-array radar and satcom terminals work. Fermionic isn't chasing low-end IoT; they're going after the hardest RF problems: high-linearity power amps, phased-array beamformers, and AI-optimized front ends.

GlobalFoundries brings its RF process expertise to the table. For Fermionic, that means bypassing the usual foundry learning curve and going straight to reliable, repeatable manufacturing. For the Indian semiconductor ecosystem, it's the first time a domestic fabless firm has a tier-one foundry as a production partner, not just a prototyping service.

This deal moves India's chip ambitions from policy announcements to actual wafers coming off the line. Fermionic's next move will be scaling those RF chips into defense and telecom contracts—if they can match GlobalFoundries' volume ramp without losing the RF performance that got them the partnership in the first place.
