Google Sues AI-Powered Scam Ring That Hit 2.5M Android Users in Two Weeks

Google says Outsider Enterprise leaned heavily on AI to generate convincing scam texts at scale. The company isn’t just relying on lawsuits; it’s using “AI-powered tools to fight AI-powered scams,” intercepting more than 10 billion scam messages per month across its services. That’s the kind of scale you need when adversaries automate.

The operation impersonated brands systematically—spoofing Google, delivery services, and financial institutions. The 9,000 fake websites were designed to steal credentials the moment victims clicked. A million domains meant they could rotate quickly to evade blocklists.

Telcos and Feds Join the Counterstrike

Google isn’t going it alone. The company has been coordinating with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon to block the scam texts at the carrier level—cutting the delivery pipeline. The FBI is also involved and has taken unspecified law enforcement actions. A coordinated takedown across infrastructure, telecom, and legal fronts is the only way to hit a network this distributed.

Outsider Enterprise’s playbook—AI-generated phishing at industrial scale—won’t be the last. But this lawsuit and the cross-industry response set a precedent for treating AI-powered crime as a systemic threat requiring systemic countermeasures.
