Until today, run tasks in HCP Terraform lived only at the organization or workspace level. For platform teams wrangling hundreds or thousands of workspaces, that forced a choice: apply a blanket policy org-wide (too coarse) or manually wire up each workspace (too tedious). Neither scales when production demands stricter security checks than staging, but both share the same compliance tooling.
What project-level run tasks actually change
HCP Terraform has always had Projects as the organizational layer between Organizations and Workspaces — grouping infrastructure by application, business unit, or environment. The missing piece was enforcing run tasks at that layer. Now, organization owners can attach a run task directly to a project, and every workspace inside that project inherits it automatically. New workspaces created or moved into the project pick up the controls without any additional config.
That inheritance is the key. It kills configuration drift because there's no per-workspace knob to turn. If a workspace needs an exception, the feature still allows granular exclusions, so you don't lose operational flexibility. The result: consistent security, compliance, and operational guardrails across environments without the manual taxonomy.
Scaling governance without scaling pain
HashiCorp explicitly designed this for the reality of large-scale deployments. Platform teams can now reduce manual workspace-by-workspace configuration by orders of magnitude. Instead of logging into 200 workspaces to attach a Sentinel policy checker or a third-party security scan, you set it once on the project.
