OpenAI’s 1GW data center campus, The Barn, will generate $1 billion in tax revenue over its lease term.

Scale and Economic Impact

The Barn will consume 1 GW of compute power, a footprint comparable to a small city’s electricity usage. Construction will create more than 2,500 union jobs, 450 permanent onsite roles, 1,500 county‑wide positions, and 1,000 indirect jobs that ripple through the local economy.

Community Commitments

OpenAI, Oracle, Related Digital, Walbridge, and Blackstone have pledged $10 million to upgrade the Saline Recreation Center, a community priority identified by the city. The project will use a closed‑loop cooling system that consumes roughly the same amount of water as a typical office building, protecting local water resources. Residents will not shoulder any infrastructure costs, and electricity rates will remain unchanged.

AI Workforce Development

During the 2026–2027 academic year, OpenAI will make up to $45 million in Codex credits available to more than 400,000 Michigan students aged 18 and older. Credits can be accessed at https://chatgpt.com/features/codex-for-michigan-college-students/. The program partners with the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and local community colleges to deliver AI literacy and workforce training that aligns with industry needs.

The initiative also ties into OpenAI’s broader Stargate program, which aims to build the infrastructure that makes advanced AI more reliable and affordable. By investing across systems, networking, and physical capacity, OpenAI hopes to turn Michigan’s industrial heritage into a new hub for AI research and deployment.
