The U.S. government employs roughly 3 million civilians—making it one of the world’s largest enterprises—and Palantir just gave it the keys to run frontier-quality AI on air-gapped hardware using NVIDIA Nemotron open models.

Palantir’s new intelligent engine lands Nemotron inside the Sovereign AI Operating System, which bundles AIP, Foundry, Ontology, and Apollo for access control and auditability. Operators train models on their own infrastructure, own the resulting weights, and never let data cross an unsecured network. NVIDIA accelerated computing handles the compute.

Why Open Models Matter for Sensitive Environments

Closed models from API providers are a non-starter when your data includes food safety inspections, interstate highway maintenance records, or energy grid telemetry. Open models let independent reviewers spot vulnerabilities and biases that a single vendor might miss. More importantly, agencies can fork, fine-tune, and lock down models in regulated settings where even a metadata leak breaks the law.

Palantir enforces explicit data authorization and architecturally isolated execution. Every inference and training step lands in an audit log. The combination of open weights and enforced isolation means agencies don’t have to choose between transparency and security—they get both.

Once a custom Nemotron model runs in production, the system collects new data and feedback from actual use. Operators retrain within their own air-gapped environment, creating a flywheel that continuously sharpens model performance. All model artifacts, logs, and improvements stay under customer control.
