Reliance Industries will build a 168-megawatt data center in Jamnagar for Meta – Meta's first built-to-suit capacity in India – with delivery inside two years.

Why Jamnagar Wins the Hyperscale Bet

Location is the secret sauce. Jamnagar sits on Gujarat's coast, giving RIL access to desalinated seawater for cooling and proximity to India's western submarine cable landing stations. Renewable energy is baked in: the facility will be fully powered by renewables, and Meta separately partnered with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy to back nearly 1 GW of clean energy generation. That is not a PR carbon offset – it’s a physical power purchase agreement at scale.

What Meta Leases, What RIL Delivers

Meta will lease the entire 168 MW capacity, with an option to scale. RIL provides end-to-end service: design, construction, utility management, renewable power supply, network connectivity, and ongoing operations. RIL positions itself as a single-window hyperscale infrastructure provider – essentially a turnkey AI factory for global tenants. 168 MW is serious compute; for comparison, a typical large hyperscale facility runs 50–100 MW.

India’s Infrastructure Play for Global AI

This is not just a real estate deal. Meta already invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms in 2020. This data center serves Meta’s global AI compute needs, not just regional traffic. India becomes a node in Meta’s worldwide AI infrastructure map. RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani called Jamnagar a “landmark destination for hyperscale AI computing.” If RIL delivers on that two-year timeline, expect other hyperscalers to follow – Jamnagar just became a reference design for how to pair coastal real estate with renewable energy and cold water.
