Ripple Drops RLUSD Into Africa's Largest Payments Rails at $3.2B Valuation

Ripple invested in Flutterwave's Series E, putting RLUSD and XRP Ledger directly into a $3.2 billion payments network spanning 30+ African markets.

Ripple just parked a strategic investment in Flutterwave at a $3.2 billion valuation, pushing RLUSD and the XRP Ledger directly into one of Africa's largest payment networks.

Flutterwave's Series E round values the company at $3.2 billion and will integrate Ripple's dollar-backed stablecoin, RLUSD, into its payments infrastructure. Businesses across Africa will be able to settle some international transactions using digital dollars rather than traditional banking rails. Flutterwave is also connecting to Ripple Payments and the XRP Ledger blockchain to process transactions faster and cheaper.

RLUSD Finds a Real Pipeline Into African Commerce

RLUSD currently has $1.6 billion in supply, growing 20% this year but still trailing Tether, Circle, and Paxos (RWA.xyz data). Global stablecoin supply hit $300 billion. This deal gives RLUSD a distribution channel in a region where remittances and cross-border commerce are economic lifelines.

Reece Merrick, Ripple's managing director for MEA, put it bluntly: "Flutterwave has built one of the most advanced payments networks in Africa, and as its infrastructure evolves, stablecoins are becoming central to that story." His statement confirms that RLUSD will establish itself inside Flutterwave's existing flows, with the XRP Ledger serving as the settlement layer.

Stablecoins Eat the Remittance Market, One Integration at a Time

Stablecoins are the fastest-growing use case in crypto outside speculation. Enterprises and everyday people in markets with limited dollar access increasingly use them to move money across borders. Flutterwave processes payments across 30+ African countries, and hooking RLUSD into that network turns Ripple from a blockchain vendor into an infrastructure partner.

Financial terms of Ripple's stake weren't disclosed, but the strategic signal is clear: Ripple is betting that stablecoin-backed payments on XRPL will eat into the high-friction, high-cost cross-border corridors that still dominate African commerce. RLUSD's supply needs to grow significantly to matter at Flutterwave's scale, but this is the kind of real onramp that beats any theoretical whitepaper.

I expect to see more fintechs follow Flutterwave's lead as stablecoin rails prove cheaper than correspondent banking, especially in regions where dollar liquidity is scarce.
