Nine senior Ethereum Foundation figures have walked out since January. Today the foundation confirmed it will slash its budget by 40% and cut headcount by 20%. That is not a pivot. That is a survival operation.
The Numbers Tell a Brutal Story
Vitalik Buterin himself announced the 40% budget reduction on June 23, 2026, the same day co-Executive Director Hsiao-Wei Wang resigned. Her exit brings the tally of departed senior leaders to nine since the start of the year. The EF also confirmed a 20% headcount reduction, though it did not specify how many of those were voluntary versus forced.
I have watched foundations and nonprofits try to shrink gracefully. This is not graceful. A 40% budget cut at an organization that coordinates Ethereum's research and development is the equivalent of pulling the fuel line on a rocket mid-flight. Either the payload is already in orbit, or you're about to watch a very expensive fireball.
Who Left and Why It Matters
Wang was a co-Executive Director alongside Aya Miyaguchi, who remains. But Wang's departure is just the latest in a string that includes key technical and operations leads. The cumulative loss of institutional memory in six months is staggering for a project that prides itself on decentralized governance and long-term planning.
Ethereum's core developers still ship code. But the organizational glue - the people who manage grants, coordinate research agendas, and keep the Foundation's relationships with L2 teams and regulators intact - is thinning fast. Every departure raises the cognitive load on the remaining staff.
What This Means for Ethereum's Roadmap
A 40% budget cut doesn't come without consequences. Expect fewer grants for ecosystem projects, slower response times on core protocol R&D, and a leaner presence at global standards bodies. The EF has already postponed or scaled back initiatives like the Fellowship Program and some Layer 1 research sprints.
Buterin framed this as a "major reset" - a chance to refocus on what matters most. I hope he is right. But when you cut 40% of spending and lose nine leaders in six months, you are not streamlining. You are firefighting. The next six months will determine whether these cuts trim fat or sever muscle.
