GitHub Copilot Ships Kimi K2.7, Its First Open-Weight Coding Model

Kimi K2.7 Code is the first open-weight model you can select directly in GitHub Copilot’s model picker — and it’s live now on Microsoft Azure.

That matters because up until now, every model in Copilot was proprietary. This opens the door to a lower-cost option for devs who want to experiment with open-weight architectures without leaving their IDE.

First Open-Weight Model Hits Copilot’s Model Picker

The model is hosted by GitHub on Microsoft Azure and billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing. No special markup, no hidden surcharge. If you’re on Copilot Pro, Pro+, or Max, you can start using it today in Visual Studio Code (version 1.127.0 or later), Visual Studio (17.14.6+), Copilot CLI, GitHub Copilot cloud agent, GitHub Mobile (iOS and Android), JetBrains (1.9.1-251+), Xcode, and Eclipse. That’s a wide net.

This is not a silent swap — you explicitly pick the model. And for Business and Enterprise plans, it’s off by default. Admins must flip the policy in Copilot settings before anyone in their org can use it. GitHub recommends reviewing open-weight models against your own security, compliance, and data-governance requirements first.

Pricing, Plans, and Rollout Specifics

Rollout is gradual. GitHub says they’ll monitor quality and performance before expanding to Copilot Business, Enterprise, and additional surfaces over the coming weeks. If you don’t see the model in your picker yet, wait a bit — they’re ramping up carefully.

For the pricing-conscience developer, this is the first sign that Copilot is commoditizing model supply. Instead of a single vendor-locked AI, you get choice with transparent cost. Provider list pricing means you pay exactly what the model provider charges — no premium for the convenience of having it inside Copilot.

What This Means for Copilot’s Model Landscape

Kimi K2.7 Code being open-weight is a signal. GitHub is treating its model picker as a marketplace, not a walled garden. Expect more open-weight models to follow — if this one doesn’t explode in cost or degrade quality, the barrier for other open models just got lower.
