Non-developers now make up 20% of Codex users and are growing more than three times as fast as software engineers. While Codex originated as a specialized tool for code generation, OpenAI is aggressively expanding its utility into high-value knowledge work through a new ecosystem of role-specific plugins and interactive web canvases.
Plugins bridge the gap between LLMs and enterprise tools
To move Codex beyond simple text and code generation, OpenAI is launching six specialized plugins that bundle specific apps, skills, and instructions. These plugins aim to integrate the model directly into existing professional stacks, reducing the friction of manual context switching. The rollout includes 62 popular applications and 110 distinct skills designed for immediate deployment.
For data-driven roles, the analytics plugin connects to platforms like Snowflake, Databricks Genie, Hex, and Tableau, allowing users to query business metrics and generate dashboards. Creative and marketing teams can leverage integrations with Figma, Canva, and Shutterstock to transform briefs into campaign assets. In the financial sector, the public equity investing plugin provides access to institutional data from Moody’s, FactSet, LSEG, and S&P, enabling investors to track market signals and assess investment theses within the Codex interface.
Sales and product teams also gain specialized workflows. The sales plugin integrates with Salesforce, HubSpot, and Outreach to help identify high-priority accounts and manage customer follow-ups. Meanwhile, the product design plugin allows teams to prototype from live URLs and audit user flows using tools like Figma and Canva.
Interactive 'Sites' transform static output into shared workspaces
OpenAI is also introducing a preview of 'Sites,' a new capability that allows Codex to generate and host interactive, lightweight websites and applications. Rather than producing static documents or files, users can now prompt Codex to build functional dashboards, scenario planners, and project boards that are accessible via a URL.
This shift moves the model from a generator of content to a generator of tools. For example, a financial analyst can prompt Codex to build a scenario planner from a complex model, allowing stakeholders to manipulate assumptions through an interactive interface rather than navigating spreadsheet tabs. Marketing teams can use the feature to turn launch materials into a living hub for messaging and milestones, which Codex can then update as project details change.
OpenAI is building toward an open ecosystem for these interactive elements, partnering with web-native companies including Wix, Replit, Webflow, and Figma. This expansion signals a broader strategic move to position Codex as the central operating layer for all professional workflows, regardless of technical expertise.
