Ninety percent of customers are now completing their insurance claims through a fully autonomous voice assistant. Travelers achieved this scale by deploying its AI Claim Assistant countrywide, moving from an eight-state pilot to national coverage in just two months.

Solving the Catastrophe Surge Problem

Insurance operations face massive volatility during catastrophe events, which can trigger over 100,000 claims in a matter of days. Last year alone, Travelers managed more than 1.5 million claims and processed over $23 billion in losses. Delivering immediate, high-confidence support during these surges is an immense operational hurdle for human-centric call centers.

To mitigate this, Travelers built the AI Claim Assistant using OpenAI's Realtime API and frontier models. The system uses natural conversation to guide customers through the first notice of loss for auto property damage, answers specific policy questions, and gathers the necessary details to submit claims directly into the company's infrastructure.

Enterprise Integration at Scale

Successful deployment required more than just a conversational interface; Travelers had to connect OpenAI models to its existing claims infrastructure, orchestration systems, and internal tools. This integration allows the assistant to operate safely at an enterprise scale while providing 24/7 support without wait times, even during peak catastrophe periods.

Patrick Gee, SVP of Auto and Property Claims at Travelers, noted that the Realtime API's specific ability to perform in a high-stakes, low-latency environment was the deciding factor for the project. By offloading the standard filing process to AI, Travelers' claim professionals can now redirect their focus toward complex cases that require human expertise.

This shift toward autonomous voice agents marks a significant milestone in how enterprise-scale financial services manage high-volume, high-stress customer interactions.
