Pine Labs P3P Gives AI Agents Autonomous UPI Spending Power

Pine Labs extends UPI mandates with delegated authorization, letting AI agents complete purchases without real-time user approval - already live with Gullak.

Pine Labs just shipped the missing payment layer for AI agents: the Pine Labs Payment Protocol (P3P) lets autonomous agents execute UPI transactions without pestering the user for an MPIN each time.

How P3P Bridges the Agent-to-Payment Gap

AI agents can search, compare, and even decide to buy — but they’ve been stuck at checkout because UPI demands real-time human authentication. P3P solves that by extending UPI’s existing mandate framework (One-Time Mandates and Reserve Pay). Consumers authorize spending upfront, set limits, and then let agents complete transactions within those bounds without further approval.

Under the hood, P3P ties UPI payment rails to Grantex’s delegated authorization and identity verification, then uses HTTP 402 — the open web standard for machine-readable payment requests — to enable secure, auditable agent-to-agent transactions. Pine Labs CEO Amrish Rau described it as the missing layer for autonomous commerce, built on capabilities already in India’s payments ecosystem.

First Live Deployment: Gullak’s Gold-Buying Agent

P3P isn’t a white paper — it’s in production. Digital gold platform Gullak is the first commercial deployment. Users set rules like “buy gold when price falls below ₹X,” and an AI agent automatically executes the purchase once the condition triggers. That’s real agentic commerce on UPI rails, today.

Electronics retailer Vijay Sales is running a proof of concept where consumers deploy AI agents to auto-purchase products when prices hit target levels. Pine Labs reports additional deployments in retail, fintech, and travel sectors are underway.

What P3P Unlocks for Agentic Commerce

The protocol keeps consumers in control: spending limits, agent verification, and the ability to revoke mandates at any time are baked in. But the big shift is removing the per-transaction friction that made AI agents useless for actual purchases.

With P3P living on UPI — the payment rail used by hundreds of millions in India — the experiment isn’t a niche lab test. It’s a production system that could turn India’s digital payments infrastructure into the first large-scale playground for autonomous spending.
