Microsoft extended its free Windows 10 Extended Security Updates program by an additional year to October 12, 2027, and did so without a formal announcement. The change surfaced as an editor's note in a Windows Experience Blog post published June 25, 2026, and in updated ESU documentation.
What Changed and How to Get It
Consumers who enrolled in the free ESU program originally had coverage through October 12, 2026. That deadline now moves to October 12, 2027. Microsoft lists four ways to stay enrolled: pay $30, back up Windows settings to a Microsoft account, redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or (for users in the European Economic Area) simply log in with a Microsoft account. A single ESU license covers up to 10 devices tied to the same account. Already-enrolled devices get the extra year automatically.
This extension only applies to personal devices not joined to Active Directory domains, Microsoft Entra ID (as a managed domain), or mobile device management (MDM). Microsoft Entra-registered devices - the lighter-touch registration - remain eligible.
Enterprise Customers Are Still Paying
Enterprise customers who missed the Windows 11 upgrade window can buy up to three years of ESU coverage for $427 per device. That price has not changed. The consumer extension is free, which suggests Microsoft wants to avoid a backlash from home users reluctant to buy new hardware while still pushing enterprise customers to pay for extra time.
No Word on Why
BleepingComputer reached out to Microsoft for a reason behind the quiet extension. The company has not responded publicly. One plausible explanation: Windows 11 adoption has been slower than Microsoft hoped, especially on older hardware that doesn't meet TPM 2.0 or CPU requirements. Another is that the original one-year ESU window was simply too short for the millions of machines still running Windows 10 after its October 14, 2025 end-of-support date.
Whatever the rationale, the extension gives IT admins and home users a concrete deadline: October 12, 2027. After that, any Windows 10 machine without an LTSC license stops receiving security updates. Plan accordingly or start budgeting for that Windows 11 hardware refresh.
