Coinbase Ships Agent Trading Tool With Native x402 Payments

Coinbase's new AI agents can execute trades, rebalance portfolios, and pay for premium research using the x402 micropayment protocol-no login or subscription required.

AI agent traffic already outpaces human traffic on the internet, and Coinbase just built the payments plumbing to let those agents trade and buy research without a human in the loop.

Agents That Trade and Pay Their Own Way

Coinbase's new agent—announced Thursday—can execute trades in crypto spot markets and derivatives, rebalance a portfolio, or follow an investment thesis on behalf of a user. Equities and prediction markets are on the roadmap. The agent integrates with Coinbase Advanced, the professional trading platform that includes TradingView charts, so it can analyze and act on technical data.

Users can sandbox the agent if they don’t want it touching their main account. Lincoln Murr, Head of AI Product, told TechCrunch the goal is “a fundamentally different product for a future where most of the internet is accessed through agents.” The agent also works inside ChatGPT or Claude via Coinbase’s MCP server.

x402: A Protocol for Agent-to-Service Micropayments

This isn’t just a trading bot with an API key. Coinbase co-developed the x402 payment protocol with AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near last year. Using that standard, the agent can pay for premium research data APIs and on-demand compute for trading insights. No login, no subscription—just a per-call micropayment.

Coinbase already had AgentKit (launched 2024) for automated wallet integration, and an AI assistant added last December. The new agent is the first to combine exchange access with native agentic payments via x402.

Standing Out in a Crowded Agentic-Cash Race

Robinhood introduced agent trading days earlier. Visa invested in Replit last month to power agent payments, and cut a deal with OpenAI this week to explore similar products. Coinbase’s edge? It owns both the exchange and the payment rail. The Financial Stability Board has already warned that regulators need safeguards for AI-driven finance—but for now, Coinbase is shipping before the rules catch up.

The agent is live. If you want a bot that can buy premium data, pay for compute, and trade on your thesis without asking for permission, this is where the puck is headed.
